I have settled on using Fantastic Battles by Nic Wright. I can put two bases together to make 40mm square units. My first sprue is nearly done and I will share some pics here soon!

@Brian Van De Walker They are rectangular for the main units, circular and oval for the heroes. The "texturing" is very subtle. It's basically the same as the 28mm round bases.
