Good bits for operators?

  • The new operators kit looks really cool. I was thinking of turning some into near-future black ops units, kinda like the SCP MTF squads to mix into various systems. Anyone know what kits/bits might be compatible with them, WGA or otherwise? I was using the Ooh Rah heads to make some technological gas masks, but I'd still like to find P90s, hands holding combat knives, and night vision goggles.

  • Hmm, well if the WW2 kits work with them, you  could raid the helmets and softcap heads and add some things that still show up from time to time like Stenguns. (both the Panzer Jager cloth covered helmets and the standard Italian WW2 helmet both look like they would work for nearfuture, you could also use the Panzer Jager bodies with the operator guns for conscripts, crews and such)

That said you could kitbash and convert them with the Iron Core kits that are the same size lots of SciFi bits in those, the eisenkern  do actually have night vision goggle parts but you will likely need to do a bit of "surgery" to get them on the operators.

For combat knives, best bet in WA's collection outside of the knife hold in the operator kit itself seems to be the  WW2 British Commandos, there are a couple of other kits you could source knife hands from though both from WA and from other comapanies.

Oh, and you could pick up the civilian weapon sprue.

  • I like that idea: the WGA world war kits are surely a great source of older weapons that can be handwaved into something a little more futuristic with some creativity (the original Star Wars movies got a lot of mileage from old war surplus guns, for example, just by adding a few "greeblies" to the base model.)  The Partisans sets can be included here, too.

Otherwise, you've PLENTY of great sci-fi stuff to work with these days:

    • WGA Ooh-rah (this kit looks like a sci-fi update to the "operators" to begin with, so a lot of the gear can likely be swapped between these two kits)
    • Reptilian Overlords "SpaceNam" (their sci-fi weapons and muscular bodies look kind of over-the-top, but maybe that's a feature, not a bug, for what you have in mind?  Probably no coincidence that the kit reminds me of the equally over-the-top mercenary team from the original Predator film, and they'd work great for kitbashing the operators into that direction....)
    • Iron Core Eisenkern Stormtroopers and Panzerjager Females (a huge selection of near-future/cyberpunk carbines, designated marksman/sniper rifles, SMGs, squad MGs, beam weapons, RPGs, grenade launchers, and pistols; these sets are almost worth buying for the versatile sci-fi weapons alone.)
    • WGA Cannon Fodder I and Cannon Fodder II Females (whose jumpsuit bodies might work well with the operators in a "Fallout" sort of setting)
    • WGA Death Fields Upgrades (an odd collection of bits; the weapons mostly look like SMG and pistol variations on the Cannon Fodder bits, including some loose bayonets, while the laser(?) rifles are unique, and the gas-mask helmets have sort of a Weird World War or Steampunk/Victorian sci-fi vibe to them.)
    • WGA Raumjager Infantry (futuristic weapons inspired by Euro weapon designs like the G36, I believe; the sci-fi helmets look pretty spooky, too)
    • WGA's soon-to-be-available The Damned kits are a Death Fields faction with a post-apocalyptic/"grimdark" vibe - think spiked helmets and armor, ragged uniforms, spooky-looking gas masks, and vaguely "AK-style" rifles that look like they're barely held together with duct-tape and bailing wire; this might work well for "operators" in a "Twilight 2000" or zombie apocalypse setting.
    • Other Death Fields factions like Bulldogs and Grognards, can probably supply some suitable gear.
    • WGA Civilians and Survivors I and Civilians and Survivors II Women (both sets include some AR style rifles and SMGs, as well as some machetes or large knives, shovels, and other improvised weapons)
    • WGA's upcoming (any day now?) Agents set (includes plenty of SMGs and handguns, and i think also some radios and other handy non-weapon bits)
    • Any of WGA's fantasy or historical sets might be raided for melee weapons like knives, hatchets, maces, and the like: a great opportunity to think outside the usual box.
    • Northstar Stargrave kits - there's at least a half-dozen of them at this point with Mercenary, Soldier, and Crewman themes - can be raided for a huge variety of weapon and non-weapon bits that would work fine in a "near future"/cyberpunk setting, including heads that might work fine for kitbashing onto the Operators.  I seem to recall these come with a LOT of combat knives, maces, and axes, in additon to a VERY random assortment of guns, and some tablet/scanner bits that might also come in handy.  The alien heads are a nice touch as well, and can be saved to your bit box for a rainy day for use in fantasy gaming as well as sci-fi, if not for this specific project.  The sculpting is a bit pudgy and soft for these kits compared to WGA's kits, and the guns pretty bulky, but things like sniper rifles, grenade launchers, rocket launchers, and the like will probably work fine on the armored Operator bodies.
    • Northstar Frostgrave and Oathmark fantasy kits can supply melee weapons and more.  The two Wizards kits (male and female) and the three cultists kits can supply some interesting and useful items like spellbooks, potion bottles, wands and staves, and so on, if you think outside the usual sci-fi box a bit.  These fantasy kits tend to include some crossbows that might come in handy (as long as you don't mind that they look a bit crude and primitive), and some of the rectangular shields like those from the Oathmark human kits might be modified into modern riot shields with a little ingenuity.  Suffers from the same pudgy/soft sculpting style as their Stargrave sci-fi cousins, but these bits can probably still work fine with WGA's operators.
    • Looks like WGA has an upcoming "Sorcerer's Spoils" frame that includes a bunch of fantasy items that might translate well enough to soft sci-fi gaming, with a little imagination, such as spellbooks and potion bottles:  maybe your Operators team includes some psykers, war priests, or combat alchemists?  A bit out of place in hard sci-fi settings, but this stuff would be right at home on the weirder, pulpier end of the sci-fi spectrum.
    • Northstar Dead Man's Hand (male and female gunslingers) are probably not an obvious place to look for sci-fi bits, but these kits come with a nice variety of six-guns, shotguns, and lever rifles that might not look far out of place on an eccentric character model, especially in a Firefly/Serenety style "space western" or a post-apocalyptic setting (again, right up the alley for a Twilight 2000 or zombie apocalypse scenario....)  Shares a similar "doughy", soft sculpting style with Stargrave, Frostgrave, and Oathmark figures, but will still probably work with the Operators (given the body armor can help hide the (mildly) weird proportions.)
