Bases Survey

Bases Survey

We've suddenly found ourselves with seven sets of hard plastic bases in various sizes and styles. We wanted to know what else you'd like us to do for bases?

I mentioned in my review of the 25mm textured bases that the I would love to see them expand to 32mm and 40mm round. These sizes are a lot more prevalent these days for army-level 28mm and skirmish-level 32mm games. 40mm ones would also be very useful for basing cavalry in games that do not use oval bases for them like Saga or ME:SBG.

The space decking bases sound like a great idea as well, and I would love to see these eventually release in the aforementioned sizes.

Finally, while I would prefer them to be textured/sculpted, I would like to see 60mm bases of some sort offered as WW1/WW2 games tend to use these for HMG teams and artillery emplacements.

Keep up the great work!

Flagstones please! Useful for a whole heap of games. (25mm round)

A sprue of flat thin clear plastic bases with a small lip on one side. Including on the sprue 15mm round (item) 20mm round (small infantry), 25mm round (standard infantry), 40mm round (large monster), 60mm round (huge monster), 30mm pill (small quadruped i.e wolf), 50mm pill (cavalry) and 75mm pill (monsterous cavalry or swarm). If there is room add an 80+mm round (gargantuan monster) also.

I suggest a wide variety of bases with only one of the larger ones and only a few of the smaller. You would do well by reducing the amount of tooling you need by including all the range on one sprue. These minis will be for RPG use so would benefit from maximum variety over bulk.
The lip is for placement of the base. Clear bases scratch easily so they benefit from a lip to minimise contact with the play surface. The lip should itself be rounded to minimise ground contact. Any normal wear will form at worst a ring which will not detract from the base.

I like the idea of the spaceship decking bases. 25mm and 30/32mm and 40mm with the 3mm bevel would be excellent. I’ve been kitbashing Ooh-Rah! with Eisenkern to make some “Space Marines” of my own. They look a lot like the MMC troops from the Expanse. Given that you guys are helping make the Expanse minis this would be an excellent time to make some great bases to go along with them. I also discovered that 40mm bases work great for light weapons teams (HMG, Rocket, drone controllers, etc) so having some with that same texture would be great. And of course powered armor troops like the Valkir would likely need some as well. It’s more complicated to make good decking bases than rubble bases, so I feel this would be a better direction than dirt or rubble.

Textured bases in every common size are always useful and would be appreciated. However, what is required is that the underside of the base is deep enough to seat a 3mm tall magnet, so if you’re sculpting detail on it needs to raise above the 3mm height, not sink below into the recess beneath the base.

Cobblestone or flagstone texture would be nice as a fantasy equivalent to the spaceship texture.

Some kind of spaceship/flying base, especially good spaceship bases are hard to come by, and will be needed for the future Expanse-ships anyway =)

Standard GW shapes and sizes with different textures for me, please.

15mm & 20mm dual use round

32mm round textured bases. That would make the space marine legions a little bit quicker to finish!
