BEF! Decisions, Decisions! Help Us Pick!

BEF! Decisions, Decisions! Help Us Pick!

The layout is back for the BEF and we have some choices to make as not all the parts will fit!

Here is the wishlist we sent to layout:

And here is where we are:

As you can see there are a lot of parts that aren't fitting currently including most of the duplicated items that are needed on the frame to outfit the six figures. There are some extra covered helmet heads that can go away without much fuss.

But before we took our red Sharpie to this we wanted to hear from you! Let us know what you would like to see done here to get to a complete, final frame of parts.

(Also keep in mind that some of these parts can also end up on the weapons team frame)

Opine away below!

Sean – layout was complete before those part changes. They’re in the final.

I thought you promised to fix the fasteners on the basic pouches?
The sprue mock up still shows the incorrect buckle closure.

I think it’s time to accept that making one sprue cover BEF and Home Guard was ambitious, generous but ultimately a bridge too far. You cannot fit all the bits to satisfy one of the units if you include parts to cover the other. If you delete all the HG parts you might cover BEF.
Could you offer the HG parts as a digital add on?

First place I’d cull would be heads – lose a couple of ‘clean’ helmets, at least half the covered helmets, 3 each of field service caps, peaked caps and the Tam O’Shanters. If more room is still needed, the Boys rifle and light mortar are only one per platoon, so could move to the weapons frame. If still more space is needed, lose one each of Thompson SMG, BAR and Lewis gun, then I’d be looking at Private Pike’s scarf – I’d love to have it for a home guard option but it’s not needed for BEF.

I’m seeing quite a few comments here completely forgetting/disregarding that this kit is meant to be pulling double duty and cover both the BEF and Home Guard, which were indeed issued BARs and Thompsons. As for my two cents, at least a (1) BAR should stay but that said, I do agree that most of the Tommys (Tommies?) should be cut – there could be more rifles on the sprue and there really isn’t a huge need for more than 1 Tommy per, in my opinion. Would like to see the shouldered Lewis Gun make it in as well, but it wouldn’t be a big loss if not (the readied one made it on for the machinegun team which is the one that really counts). If you will indeed be doing a “weapons team” frame, then I don’t see why the Boys and mortar wouldn’t be moved to that instead (being the literal frame made for them, lol).

Where is a leather jerkin vest? We need at least one guy in it. For me it is a trademark of BEF.

Sean Tighe - December 18, 2023

I’d lose all the BAR, all but one of the Thompsons, SD caps, leave the 2" mortar, Lewis gun and Boyes AT rifle for the weapons sprue. The scarf can go, as can half the covered helmets, field service caps and Tams.
That should leave room for web gear and one of the pistol arms.

69 needs to be there (for the pose, not the number) and I firmly believe each frame NEEDS a left and a right handed pistol so you can make a gonzo dual weilding hero.

Jason Mortimore - December 18, 2023

The BEF wouldn’t have used BARs, Lewis guns were second line troops use. Only the foot guards wore SD caps. Thompson smgs didn’t reach the BEF until April 1940. The two piece entrenching tool set wasn’t introduced until late 1940 as the one piece 37 patter shovel kept getting in the troops way. Some of these listed parts would be fine for home guard (15 years in the Royal Artillery museum pay off sometimes).

As many action poses with rifles as you can fit. The other weapons look fun but for wargame purposes you need lots of guys with rifles
