Conquistador Cavalry Survey

Conquistador Cavalry Survey

We've been finalizing the parts and getting ready to go to layout. Most recently we listened to your requests to add some pistols to the frame (we will also have suitable holsters along with some mirrored left arms for some)

But we need to make a choice between matchlock and wheel-lock pistols! Let us know in the survey and leave any comments at the bottom of the page!

Did mounted cavalry ever actually use matchlock pistols?

Acorn - March 25, 2024

Both could be an option. If the need arises, it should be possible to cut a wheelock’s other half off and glue it to another arm.

Only comment I have is you are doing a great job and huge service for the community. Bless you!

speaking as a history teacher and history buff, Wheelocks seem most appropriate, since those were the preferred choice for cavalry, and were what made pistol armed cavalry viable. matchlocks required two hands to prep and fire, which made them hard to use while mounted, and impossible to prep ahead of time due to the use of a burning slowmatch and open topped powder charge in the lock.

I would say both for the potential kit bashing possibilities but if only one can be so then I’d say wheel locks just cause my internal logic is wheel locks are expensive and if you got the money for a horse your more likely to be able to afford wheel locks. Not sure if that’s historical but just what my brain pops out

Chris - March 23, 2024

Honestly, why not both?

James Langham - March 23, 2024

Maybe 3 wheel locks (preferably 1 left handed) and a single wheel lock?

Maple Sullivan - March 23, 2024

Really excited for this set, and can’t wait to pre-order my own. Really hope you do a Left Handed arm in addition to the right one!

Mike Allen - March 23, 2024

Both? wheel locks were around but very expensive in the early 16th century. Most mounted were more likely to carry crossbows but by the mid 16th century a “carbine” became more common. It was the mid 16th century before 3/4 armoured cavalry developed using wheel lock pistols and carbines. So having these as Conquistadors you are looking much later than Cortez. In the early 16th century the cavalry would have used lances and swords, mounted infantry carried missile weapons but weren’t trained as cavalry, dismounting to fire their weapons.

Historically, wheel lock pistols were used by cavalry. I have never read any account of matchlock pistols being used by cavalry.
