Horses Previewed: Poll and Prizes!

Horses Previewed: Poll and Prizes!

The upcoming Afghan Cavalry set will mark the first use of our generic horses. We decided early that having plain horses that come with a simple saddle blanket could form the foundation of a lot of cavalry sets.

In some cases in future sets we may add unique horse heads, saddles, and other equipment to the rider sprues to customize those sets. And in other cases we will need to have completely different horses in the set (for example for smaller or larger breeds or horse armor that can't be added as separate pieces)

Here's an image showing the sprue layout and one of the first painted versions by Matthew Leahy:

There are 6 halves that are interchangeable with separate heads (4) and tails (3) so that you can achieve a large number of combinations and have a good variety of poses for your units.

We've been debating internally about selling the horses separately for those who either want to convert over from metal ones and save some weight or have extra riders (or want to convert riders). To that end we have a poll - fill it in and leave your email (optional) for a chance to win a box of figures.

Cavalry isn’t really my thing as an RPG and sometimes skirmish gamer, but this looks like a really useful, versatile, and great-looking set! To me, it looks like it’s suitable for anything from the Renaissance to the 20th Century, anywhere around the world (for example, the American wild west), and maybe also for armies from earlier eras, like a Mongol horde, and naturally for fantasy gaming.

I wonder if Wargames Atlantic could be persuaded to include a sprue of things like saddlebags and stowage (like bedrolls and such) in a companion cavalry accessory set with more modern saddles?

I could imagine teams of these horses also being used as draft horses harnessed with things like supply wagons, stage coaches, artillery pieces, chariots….

I would buy both Les Grognards cavalry and medieval knights instantly.

These models pool great and I’m super excited to see them released, it’d be great for range diversity in alot of the ranges, especially if some upgrade sprews would be produced for specific armies to fit them in better.

I’d also like to make a quick suggestion,I’d like to see a similiar command/heavy support kit for the Raumjager and Einherjar factions for death fields, maybe make them something unique and fluffy like having the command characters for the Raumjagers have jetpacks or something to refrence their elite paratrooper background while the Einherjar have commanders in bigger mech suit gun platforms to make up for their small size. It’d also be interesting to see giant spiders have some more diversity in deathfields aswell, becoming one of the 4 main factions of the game when it comes out.maybe have them be the horde army with a focus on melee,Raumjager’s are elite mobile forces that are glass canons that have alot of jetpack units and lighr-meduim vehicles,Einherjar are hard to kill and hard hitting in melee but slow all around with some big mechs, and the Grognards are a well rounded force that has a focus on artillery and turrets.

this looks like a good idea

Good move to have separate horses – their size will be the most significant factor in deciding whether to purchase – not just height but girth – just how generic they can be when there are so many different horse sizes in “28mm” ! Good luck

I would buy one or more boxes of 24 generic horses, they are useful for a lot of stuff (carts, chariots, Mars 28mm-29mm Knights that need new steeds, etc.). The issue is I don’t know if rider would sell separately, though if you did Dragoons or any horse mounted infantry troops sets as infantry with horse rider legs it might work out.

I see great potential in these. I love to smash smash and kitbash I’ve already got ideas for these ponies.

One idea I have is to sell a box of various legs for riding that match all the different sets you offer. Then we could buy the horse box, buy the riding leg box and combine it with whichever torsos and heads we wanted. This could be a way to add cavalry to most of the sets that are already being produced.

I guess you could include lances and arms in the riding leg box if you guys were feeling fancy.

Crimean War British light Brigade.

Including downed horses and casualties.

To see the sort of thing I had in mind look at Strelets 1/72nd box. Charge of the light Brigade. Incredibly dynamic poses showing the figures charging and the fantastically sculpted wounded survivors being helped back. One of the best 1/72nd sets I own.
