Upcoming Plastic Sets for Classic Fantasy Battles

Upcoming Plastic Sets for Classic Fantasy Battles

As Andy Hobday and team continue to playtest and refine the rules for Classic Fantasy Battles - our new mass battle 10mm game - we wanted to give you some insight into the hard plastic sets that are being prepared.

The game will launch with a massive two player box in late 2025/early 2026 and the armies will be Good vs. Evil. But those aren't the only armies you can build in the game!

Our first two hard plastic releases are the Orc Horde (which is already out and we love seeing all of you building your armies!) and next is the Dwarven Host. These two forces form the core of the Good and Evil armies in the main game box. As such, we've done them as full frames with multiple units on each frame like cavalry, heavy and light swordsmen, spearmen, bowmen, crossbowmen, etc.

In Classic Fantasy Battles armies can field a variety of units from a mix of races (sometimes Good and Evil armies can both field units from the same race - more on that below). So the Good army may have a mix of Dwarven units, Horselords cavalry, Elven halberdiers, Halfling pikemen, Landsknecht Ogre mercenaries, a friendly Giant, Treemen, and a variety of others. An Evil army may have several Orc units, a Goblin swarm, Landsknecht Ogre mercenaries, an unfriendly Giant, Boneblades (Undead Swordsmen), Boneriders (Undead Cavalry), and Trolls. An army may be comprised solely of a dragon!

That said, you could also build an all-Orc army, an all-Dwarven army, an Undead army, an army of Giants, an Elven army, etc.

Our release plan for the lead up to Classic Fantasy Battles is to focus first on units that will make up the two big armies. So instead of having a frame of Undead with 4-6 units on it, we'll start with Boneblades - Undead Swordsmen. This will come on our new 1/2 size (113mm x 151mm) frame and you'll get enough frames in the unit box to fill 9 40mm x 20mm bases with 12 figures each (108+ figures including command and casualties - and a lot of skulls!)

Future releases will flesh out (see what I did there?!) the Undead army with cavalry, spearmen, archers, scythemen, and more.

Almost every unit we make will have follow on units to build full armies. The exception might be for those races who make up mercenary units or races where their entire army is made up of one kind of troop type like the Horselords.

As we start ramping up releases over the next few months you'll get to see more of the races and units in the Classic Fantasy Battles game. As always we'll welcome suggestions for races and units as we go along.

Also several of you have asked about our pure historical Grand Battle Scale sets including the Samurai and Azincourt sets. Although they won't be "official" armies within Classic Fantasy Battles, Andy has promised some army lists and special rules to allow you to field them as either units in your armies or as full armies. But just know that the Horselords won't be the only human armies in CFB either!

Lots more to come - if you haven't already please join us at our dedicated Classic Fantasy Battles Facebook group where we talk about the rules, give sneak peeks of new models, and generally release news about CFB first!

I’m excited about everything with this, but most appreciative of the flexible army building. I want to hobby and paint a variety of races, and you are checking that box for me perfectly. Thanks and keep it coming team!

Regarding historical miniatures, look at how Mantic handles them in Kings of War: one generic, flexible “Kingdoms of Man” list that can accommodate anything from Romans to Musketeers with common support like Ogres, mythological monsters, etc.

Regarding half sized sprues for single units to start smaller races off with, I think that’s faffing about, just make full factions at a slower pace if need be. Parity is important.

Undead will be great. Personally though I wouldn’t be interested in any scythe armed figures (farmers use scythes to cut grass whereas soldiers will carry swords, spears, axes etc).
OK – so the Grim Reaper is often depicted carrying a scythe, but he’s only one character.
Just my two pen’orth 😉

Those horselords look wicked, also excited for Acincourt and more Samurai. And for the rest of the Fantasy series. The skeletons look a bit uniform with the exact same helmet on all of them. But I guess I have to see them painted first, before I can judge anything.

I noticed with the Grand Battle Scale Orc horde that the 2 and 3 figure stands are copies of the 5 figure stands. I don’t like this approach because when you base them, you get three Orcs all in the same pose on one side of the base and 3 Orcs all in the same pose on the other side of the base – I know you can fiddle with this to make it less obvious, but why not make different poses for the 2 and 3 bases to provide some variety? This seems like a lazy shortcut for a company that prides it self in making swoppet style 28mm figs.
Please…

The artwork for the Horselords is ace! I would love to see the horselords Miniatures in 28mm scale.

So are y’all announcing grand battle scale dragons, trolls, goblins, and giants or suggesting that those can be found via third party?

Lee - May 17, 2025

Love this project and looking forward to seeing your 10mm ranges grow!

This is a very clever way to do it. I really like the idea of building an army with a bunch of unit boxes of all types of troops. I can see army list creation being a lot of fun. Excited!
