“In this sign, conquer”. The legions underwent significant expansion and changes through Diocletian and Constantine’s reforms but by the late 6th century would become almost unrecognizable. Still, the legionaries fought across the whole of the Roman world against Pict and Irish raiders in Britannia, Vandals in North Africa, Sassanid Persians in Mesopotamia, and the never-ending onslaught of migrating Germanic and Hunnic tribes. More often than not they fought in brutal civil wars to determine who would be Emperor.

This hard plastic set allows you to build up to 24 legionaries with spatha, spear, and plumbata along with two types of standards and full command. This set provides three different helmet options: the Niedebieber, ridge, and Spangenhelm styles along with the fur “Panonnian” cap. There are two types of crest options and extra heads to create command. This set can also be used to create armored warriors for many Dark Age armies including Goths, Burgundians, Saxons, Franks, and the Romano-British among others.

Great models, lots of kitbashing potential

I got a set to use in Saga, and love them. The range of heads is phenomenal, and has allowed me to kitbash and convert a few other models as well.

While the shields are substantially larger than other manufacturers', this was not a deal breaker for me. I would recommend a lot of dry fitting, and I attached the shield to the arm, then the arm to the body... then the weapon arm. It seemed to work out OK.

Overall, fantastic kit.

Great kit

I will just echo what others have said regarding the large shields. They can be very difficult to place and are possibly too large compared to actual late legion equipment. Be sure to dry fit your weapons/shield combinations before gluing.

Otherwise this is a great set with well sculpted models and a great selection of equipment. Lots of conversion possibilities for both historical and fantasy armies based on the late Roman period.

Solid set

I've used these figures for a unit of Roman Deserters in Saga as well as bashing them with parts from the Dark Age Irish set and the Goths set to make hearthguard figures for several other warbands. One highlight with this set is that the models themselves build well and are very sturdy.

Great figures with a big but

I love this set, while I can agree the period depicted is limited, IMHO it also allows for a great accuracy. The men are superbly sculpted and well proportioned. I personally liked the multiple heads allowing to create a more Western or Eastern like force.

My only but is the shield. I feel it’s a tad too big compared to most depictions of the period. Which also makes it harder to set the other arm. While as a modelist one should always dry fit everything first, in this case I think the range of error is way too wide.

In summary, reducing the shield size would make it pretty much perfect.

Outstanding quality and versatility

This versatile box of mailed infantry are ideal for Late Roman and Dark Ages historical gaming, but could also be well suited for fantasy/sorcery scenarios. You get some great poses, helmet types, and many weapon choices that include plumbata throwing darts (spare darts are affixed to the inside of the shields -- nice touch). These figures mix and match well with the WA Goths and Irish Warriors, but also are a good fit with Gripping Beast plastic figures. Highly durable plastic means these figures will survive years of heavy use on the table.
