A CHARGE OF BRIGHT STEEL!

Gunpowder cannon transformed the battlefields of Europe in the late 15th and into the 16th century and then those battlefields were transformed again as matchlock and wheel-lock firearms could be fielded by infantry…and cavalry. Cavalry of the period was typically of two main types: the Demi-lancer and the Reiter. Both typically wore three-quarters plate armor specializing on the lance for the former and a combination of sword and pistol for the latter.

This hard plastic box set allows you to build up to 12 riders equipped with sword, matchlock pistol, wheel-lock pistol, and lance. Optional armor pieces are included for the horses (or the horses can be used plain with the included saddles). A mix of hat and helmet types will expand their use to the battlefields of Europe in the 15th and 16th and into the 17th centuries. 8 War Dogs complete the box.

There are three unique frames in the box:

4X Rider and Horse Armor Frame

4X Conquistador Head/Saddle Frame

4X Horses Frame

Fabulous set

Absolutely fabulous models. So many options here. Wargames Atlantic is making it very tempting to build out some Italian Wars armies here. I can see that Warhammer (or is it Old World now?) players will be all over these. 12 for £30 goes a long way! Well done set.

WARNING

You cannot make 12 fully armoured demilancers or 12 Pistoliers with this set, you have to mix and match. This is because there are only a total of 12 left arms that are armoured: 4 with nothing to hold reins, 4 with pistols, and 4 with shields. This is useless for any actual armoured cavalry of the Renaissance, because they a) didn't use shields, and b) didn't carry pistols in both hands at once (the only pistol right arms are armoured, so you have to use the armoured left arm to match). You can even see that the promotional minis used on the packaging and the website have mismatching armoured/unarmoured arms. This is a massive design issue, stemming seemingly from the split of the initial conquistador cavalry set into two. Yes, this set gives you a lot of pieces, but they are very much useless for actual Renaissance cavalry. Dogs - fun but useless, shield arms and shields - useful for conquistadors as per the original set design, useless for generic cavalry, unarmoured arms with lances - again, useful when this was a specifically conquistadors set, useless if you want demilancers, most heads being repeats from the infantry set - useless and annoying, 4 different armoured sword arms - useless, only 12 holstered pistols - only half as many as should be to give a brace for each rider... That's not to even mention that if you want to use the burgonet helmets with the gorget, you have to scrape off the gorget and neck joint that's already moulded onto the torsos! They seem to have done it for the promotional minis but not informing a customer about this I find pretty shameful. Overall, if you want to make some Pistoliers for your Warhammer Estalian army, this box works far better for that than what it's seemingly designed for. Frustrating and disappointing.

Cavalry for both worlds

Nice miniatures to use on both sides of the Atlantic, lots of pieces for conversions. May be used also as Imperial Ritters.

Charging the night away ..

I just purchased the next two boxed sets in the Renaissance line. The conquistador and renaissance heavy cavalry. Very versatile kits. Out of the heavy ones you can make 16 riders if you have 4 spare horses or simply purchase a sprue of 4 extra ;-) When you assembled them there is plenty of plastic reamaining to kitbash all other troops you have stocked up in your grey pile of shame. I used all the heads on other troops just because I like them better then the other ones from different manufacturers. I love to kitbash and the Wargames Atlantic Reanaissance line is ideal for my 17th century fantasy & historical addiction. Happy gaming.
