Grand Battle Scale Azincourt armies

  • The recent announcement has me excited for the 'Grand Battle Scale Azincourt armies'. This might just be my ticket to wargaming the Hundred Years' War and other wars in the late middle ages. With very little to go on so far, let's get that rumour mill going and maybe even indulge in a little wishlisting. Who knows, maybe a few wishes will even be granted?

    Speculation

Based on the earlier samurai release I'd assume there will probably be three boxes - one French, one English and one command. In the English box I'd expect well more than half the models to be longbowmen and the rest dismounted men-at-arms. In the French box I'd expect crossbowmen and mounted and dismounted men-at arms. In the command box I'd expect a mixture of mounted and dismounted standard bearers, musicians and assorted commanders for both sides. In line with the samurai army command box, I'd expect all lances and other polearms to be a bit beefier than those fragile ashigaru pikes.

    Wishlist

No stakes for the longbowmen or pavises for the crossbowmen please. I can easily make those out of plastic rod and plasticard so would rather get more models on the sprues.

I'd be really happy if the release's scope could be expanded beyond just the battle of Agincourt. I'd be interested both in earlier battles during the Hundred Years' War and in other wars during the late middle ages. The addition of other troop types like spearmen, billmen and light horsemen could vastly increase the number of options. I'm no expert on medieval armour and equipment but hopefully there wasn't too much going on at Agincourt that would make the models obviously unsuitable for other battles/wars in the late 1300s/early 1400s.

  • I hope the medieval grand scale battle figures take off. I would love to see them expand into the Wars of the Roses and maybe ancients.

  • Since last month I've come across a few more tidbits of information.

From this preview of the rulebook for Heiho, a Sengoku Japan mass-battle game with a note from Wargames Atlantic:

'Our Samurai range is only the first for 10mm Grand Battle Scale. The second historical range is Azincourt which is kicking off with French Knights, English Knights, English Longbowmen, and Genoese Crossbowmen.'

Interesting. My speculation about how the range'll be divided into boxes may be wrong. The capitalisation appears to be hinting at the four mentioned troop types each being a box in its own right. This would be in line with Wargames Atlantic's recent announcement that future releases for Classic Fantasy Battle will be unit-based. If this is indeed the case, perhaps the difference between the French and English Knights boxes will be that the former will be mounted and the latter dismounted?

Also, to my knowledge there were no Genoese crossbowmen at Agincourt so perhaps there's an ambition to expand the range to the Battle of Crécy, where the Genoese crossbowmen did famously take the field. The 'kicking off' language does seem to hint at the possibility of more troop types being added later.

Finally, I'm probably the last person to find this old old sneak peek at early WiP French knight and English longbowman sculpts but I still thought I'd link to it just in case anyone's not seen them yet.

'The Azincourt range will allow you to field all the troops to recreate the epic battle between England and France! From the iconic English longbowmen and mounted French knights to Genoese crossbowmen, men-at-arms, foot knights, and much more! And all done in the fantastically detailed 10mm size of Grand Battle Scale! (Who among you will do the battle at 1:1?!?)

Here's a first sneak peek at the beginnings of the designs by Rob Macfarlane (with a Samurai archer for comparison):

Keep in mind these are VERY early work-in-progress test sculpts before we get into the refining of detail and check for historical accuracy. 10mm is a tricky thing to model for hard plastic as it's the equivalent of making all single piece 28s (digital has no scale as you could see in the original post about the Samurai with the photo comparing the 10mm versions to the enlarged and 3D printed 28s). So the sculptor has to take into account all the areas where undercuts may create a problem and the draft angles of all the components of the piece. The first iteration may be more focused on the technical needs than the historical accuracy which will then be addressed prior to sending the files to engineering. There is also a fine balancing act between showing and emphasizing the right details so that the figures look great at scale. The set will mimic the Samurai and Ashigaru ones with 1, 2, 3, and 5-man groupings that will allow you to base them for a variety of rules.

Let us know what you think below and keep an eye out for the full reveal as we move these sets toward completion later this year!'

  • Here's a look at some WIP sculpts they shared a little later, I believe this image was in one of the website's news posts that were lost a while back (don't remember how it happened or how many posts were lost, at least a month's worth). I found it in an article from OnTabletop. You can see the French knights mounted and unmounted (top left), the English knights (bottom left), English longbowmen and militia(?)(top right) and the Genoese crossbowmen (bottom right).

As for how many sets to expect, these comments from Hudson Adams on Facebook seem to imply that besides the four kits there will also be an army set for the French and the English respectively:

  • Thanks for sharing! There was still much more out there than I realised.

Overall I'm very happy with what I'm seeing in terms of sculpts. The mounted knights look very dynamic and have a decent variety of poses. A lot of the foot knights have surcoats, which will serve as a nice canvas to add some colour in the sea of metal armour. The militia could be used as-is and some of them could be converted relatively easily into javelinmen or medium swordsmen. The longbowmen look nice. So do the crossbowmen, and it even looks like some of them come without pavises (which are separate) and others look like their pavises could be removed relatively easily.

It appears pavises and stakes will be included on the sprue then. Not what I was hoping for but I can live with it. Standard bearers for the longbowmen and crossbowmen might have been nice but it looks like those could be easily converted from the militia.

I'm curious what's in the works in terms of commanders. No word on those in the Facebook comments nor seemingly any models in the pictures I've seen so far.

  • army commanders in the armies of england and france at the time tended to be equipped the same as their other nobles (that is, as knights), so i don't think you'd get a seperate command box the way you did with samurai

  • I am so looking forward to this. I will be fighting come at Crispin's day next year, as I fear this year my painter might not make it even if they come out yesterday

  • Any idea when they are scheduled to go on pre-order or released? It's seems like they have been progressing slower than other releases. I am very excited for the release of these figures....

  • I just noticed the following on the release schedule page:

I would guess photography comes before box design, box printing and possibly more, but this suggests the molds have been finalised and at least some miniatures have been produced and painted so apparently they're now quite far in the process.

Strange. The English have gone from box design to model painting. I would have thought painting would come earlier. Maybe something's gone wrong and they're now correcting it?

  • I'm really excited for these. Is there any chance the sets will be out by Christmas?

  • @Henri de Grosmont I am thinking, for no reason at all, they will be out on the 25th this month!

  • @Marc Hameleers Here's hoping!

  • I wonder how long it takes from box design to being ready to order? I really can't wait to get my hands on these army sets. I am curious what they will retail for.

  • @Marc Hameleers It took me 3 weeks to get this joke! Good one!

  • Happy St. Crispin day!

  • It seems like there hasn't been a weekly update from WA the past few Fridays.

Saint Crispin's Day has come and passed and I keep hoping to see an announcement for the release of these two army sets.

  • man, i'm getting weirdly excited for this. im not much for historicals, but being able to carry around my favorite medieval battle in a box might just convince me to pull the trigger.

  • Big preview with lots of pictures

    13 November update:

Consider me excited! The models look very nice all painted up. Detailed enough to look good on closer inspection and small/numerous enough for a mass effect.

  • That post with the images mentioned that the box sets will be 700 figures each. That's going to be a lot of painting. Look forward to the challenge.

  • We only would need around 45 boxes to play Agincourt in accurate numbers on the table.....

    Preorders coming soon, perhaps...?

  • Dear wargames Atlantic

Not letting me preorder the azincourt army boxes right now is making me lose sleep, and borders on torture.

Please help me sleep again, and let me throw money at you.

    Thanks

  • @Marc Hameleers

I feel much the same way. I'm sure some matters can't be controlled or sped up...however I was hoping to add these to various holiday wish lists and I'm not sure the timing will allow that now.

When they are ultimately available, I will order them myself. Much like a child on Christmas Eve, I am growing very impatient. Haha.
