Continuation War/WW2 Finns from WW1 Germans!

  • Another project of mine that I started quite a while ago was to do some Winter War/Continuation War Finns. The goal was to have a small force for bolt action, and unfortunately, I've still not been able to actually play a game, but I do have a platoon of Finns now! When researching the topic, it seems like a lot of people reach for the WW2 German kits from bolt action and then kitbash with soviet weapons sprues. I decided to go a different direction. The WW1 German kit has plenty of options for weapons and heads, and generally speaking the stahlhelms work pretty well with a couple of peaked caps for the officers. (in my research it seems like there was a ton of variety with headgear for the Finns, especially by 1944, I had even thought of buying the WW2 Italian kit for some M1933 helmets for variety, as there are many photographs of Finnish troops wearing similar helmets late in the war). For weapons standard bolt action rifles work fine, and the MP18s bear enough of a resemblance to the Suomi KP-31 or PPSH-41 to work for a tabletop game. The goal here was reasonable accuracy, not 100% perfection. The only area that I was a little unsure of was the use of puttees/leg wraps. Most illustrations and photos show boots, although I have seen a couple with puttees, so whatever.

For the painting, I went with a mix of the standard light grey uniforms with a couple of the later dark grey uniforms for variety.
