getting Cavalry mounts in general accountrements that aren't tied to specific faction sets

  • basically what the title says. i kinda wish that we'd get some boxes of cavalry mount options that just exist to be options for cavalry, without them being tied to specific faction cavalry boxes, or having to wait for a faction set to come out first. especially given that cavalry is envitably going to be showing up in a number of deathfields and classic fantasy factions.

the general accoutrements range having boxes of horses is great, but it would be kinda nice if they had more option than just two varieties of horses avalable, especially for scifi and fantasy settings where horses aren't the only option (the way that it is with historicals) and even with horses, it would be nice to have more variety than just "large and small"

the WGA digital has Raptors for example, and while i'd personally have preferred feathered ones closer to modern renditions, they'd still be a useful alterntive option for say, the Grognard Cavalry. or to put cavalry figures from the historical ranges (like say, conquistadors) to create a more obviously fantasy style unit.

it might be nice to get some options to pick from in the range.. say, a chocobo like bird mount, some sort of giant wolf mount, maybe a megaloceros style giant deer, etc. just to give people some options without having to rely on 3dprint stuff (which is often expensive and limited in poses, since it is usually being made for for D&D than minis wargaming)

and even with horses it might be nice if we could get some extra variety.. WGA digital has a number of horses in armor for example (cataphracts, the hittite chariot, the death fields demir, etc) which could be very nice to have in plastic as options for sticking existing cavalry onto.

  • @Mithril2098 Wholeheartedly agree. I've been expanding into cavalry for some of my armies and I'd love an option that doesn't require as much kitbashing. Fortunately WGA seems quite interested in making their sets accessible that way, like with the giant spiders combining with goblins, or the bulldogs raptors coming to plastic (eventually). I think the best bet would be things that can work on their own or combined with a set. Wargs would definitely fit in that category.

Just off the top of my head:

    - Armored mutant/demon horses! Would be nice for damned, knights, or more scary-looking grognards.

Varanguard Slaves to Darkness Warhammer Age of Sigmar
    - Wyverns! Could come in a smaller box, but would lovely for bigger leaders or solo use. Couldn't be too hard to make a space version, either. (I've been obsessed with this piece of wayne reynolds art basically since I saw it!)

-Motorcycles? I feel like I've always wanted some, though I'd bet they're a tougher sell due to the different riding arms.

  • howabout mechanical walkers, ala the cawdor ridgewalkers in 40K?

and agreed that motorbikes might be trickier to make universal, but some sort of wheeled transport might still be fun as an option. maybe something like a quadbike? (which might fit better with the 'astride saddle' pose of horse cav figures) or maybe something wackier like a segway crossed with a mechanical bull.

and honestly if need be you could include additional arms in a bike kit that can be used to convert.

  • @Mithril2098 But we do already there is a horse box and a Chariot box🤣

That joke aside, the arm issue, etc. could be worked around likely already fake future bike controls don't need to be in the same place real ones are and game wise wouldn't they have Ai auto driving anyways since we are not talking Hammerhead lore?🤔 (I got my Damned pledge recently and eyeing the "we should have been bikers" horse cavalry with scratch built bikes in mind) and you would have those issues with anything mechanical that would actually make sense being mechanical anyways.

Honestly it would be pretty easy to do standard motorbikes for Death Fields, just pick the one most common in WW2 and scifi it up, either that or go with Ache war dutch bikes though I doubt those would look as cool scified up. Also the Rebel Yell and Raum Jager  both  have motorbikes that would work as genric cross faction motorbikes. Yet another option for universal scifi motorcycles is taking heavly from anime that have them like Akira, Venus Wars or Mospedia (I would go with Venus War's sporting cycles since it would be easy to modify the design to work figures meant to ride horses, though the army bikes are more awesome).

As to non-Death fields motorbikes, for Pulp it should either be a Hog knockoffs or rice rockets, my vote is for rice rockets cause they honestly make more sense in a near future dark age and are cooler in my opinion.

  • Yeah, on second thought, it's not like horses don't need special arms and bodies to work with riders either. The current grognards cavalry set doesn't have any physical reins, either, so it wouldn't be that hard to have motorcyclists steering mostly with their feet. And as a certified guard fan, I'm going to hurl if I see people turning the Jackals kit into motorcycle cavalry one more time.

  • Monowheels would be neat. and they'd certainly resolve the controls issue, since steering on those is more down to shift of balance, with the handlebars generally being just for holding on. i'd wanted to get some of the mantic ones for my catgirl cannonfodder (and give then headswaps) but by the time i got to that point in the project, you couldn't get them except for mantic direct (shipping from the UK) and the tarrifs hit. and i wasn't about to spend $100+ on multiple GCPS deadzone starter boxes just to get the one per box those had. makes me kinda wish i had a 3D printer so i could just get the STL from their digital vault and print them off.

  • @Mithril2098 if you had a 3D printer, there would likely be better options than mantic's monowheels, like you could probably do this one:

  • eh, i like mantic's monobikes, design wise at least. and i was aiming at more of a 'scout infantry' element for that army. in the end i went with an armored car instead. personally i'm hoping that when cannonfodder get their cavalry kit, it'll be bikes of some kind (horses are expensive animals to clone, train, and maintain. why waste them on cannonfodder? motorbikes, especially cheap motorbikes, need a lot less upkeep for the team owners)

  • @Mithril2098 agreed though honestly I kinda of felt the CF where done with the infantry sets, like maybe add an RPG team for big battles so its more fun but as a team I feel they they are just sent in to die.
