Preview: Late Romans in Scale Armor!

We're just wrapping up the box design on this one and injection has already been done in the UK so we can (hopefully!) get the mold over to the US soon. WAALR005 Late Roman Legionaries (2): Lorica Squamata.

Painting by Stephan Huber

This box set features our typical smorgasbord of helmet types so that you can depict several different eras. This time we moved the shields to their own frame to free up space for extra parts and six unique bodies.

This set will mix and match quite happily with WAALR001 Late Roman Legionaries (1): Lorica Hamata as well as our WAALR002 Goth Warriors, WAALR004 Dark Age Army Builder, and several upcoming sets in the range. The bodies and some helmets are perfect for noble warriors in the armies of the Goths, Saxons, Franks, Burgundians, and other enemies of Rome.

Standby for the pre-order date coming in the not too distant future!

Looking forward to this set. Scale armor will work for late Romans, various barbarians, and kitbashing for some of my fantasy figs. Appreciate how you have included some heads wearing what looks like 2nd-3rd Cent AD Roman helmet from Siviac. Serbia. That’s a period that doesn’t get much coverage in plastic kits. Kudos!

Those look great! Are there shield transfers available yet?

These look sooooo cool. I love the imperial-style helmets from this set.
That said, will you ever make plastic early imperial era legionaries for the “Might of Rome” range?
Or at least some conversion bits, like early imperial scutum? I would love something to go along with your “Citizens of Rome” set.

Hi Paul – most shields for this period are depicted wrong actually! We went with the dimensions of the shield found at Dura-Europos. It’s quite large and I suppose if I was a legionary I’d want a big shield too!

These are looking great, looking forward to some cavalry next. The one issue I am pondering is if the shields are too fat. Most other minis I have seen for this period have shields that are not as wide. I would probably replace the shields with this kit.

These are superb! It would be nice if the late roman box came with both sprues. Hope to see lamellar armor and even mounted late romans/ goths!

I second Alejandra than a guide on which helmets are which would be excellent.
Really nice kit

Stunning looking sculpts, cant wait to mash these with the dark age army builder and the goths to make my Foederati. I agree with the other comment about a bit of info in the pack detailing what eras/region each helmet type show! Was also thinking you could make a late roman light infantry set? More skirmishing options, more missile weapons and more pannonian caps and tunic armour? Cant wait for the cavalry too!

Alejandra - September 21, 2025

These look really good.

A small suggestion:
Since this set comes with such a large variety of helmets, it would be cool if you made a post explaining what era they were used in and by whom. As someone who isn’t that knowledgeable about this era in history, that would help a lot.

(Kind of like the post where you explained what all the heads in the Army Builder can be used for and which tribes they represent.)
