Two New Sets - Merovingian Franks and Conquistador Cavalry

Two New Sets - Merovingian Franks and Conquistador Cavalry

Today we wanted to show you the first renders of some of the parts that would go into two new sets!

Merovingian Franks will join the Late Roman Legionaries (1): Lorica Hamata, Goths, and the two Army Builder sets for both of these in our Decline & Fall range.

And also the Conquistador Cavalry which will complement our Conquistadors set. These will include options for part-armored, unarmored, and full-armored riders. You can of course have all unarmored horses as well

We welcome your advice on both of these sets below! Not every part may make the final set and some parts may be added or changed before this is finalized for tooling.

Will the horse-bit remain as large and the bridles as wide as in the picture ?
It would be interesting to see what a double bridle bit really looks like : it is much finer and more subtle.
The spanish bits of the time ressemble what is called in french “mors de dressage”, “mors de bride” ou “mors Saumur”, and the british “PELHAM BIT” is very similar.

I am dissaponted that you are making this historcal setts wit only the parts that are usful to them, insted of including parts that would be usful if iwas mekin somthing else.

no guns? no slings? no female bodies? (If you dont make them we wil never see a female body) i would have bouth a sprue, but now i wont.

did Conquistador cavalry ride armoured horses..in Mexico and South America? Did Spanish armies in Europe have cavalry with riders like that on armoured horses..fair enough if they did but i would have thought in Europe the horses from Spanish stock at least would be bigger esp to support all that armour

Please, please, please some heavier close helms for the Conquistador cavalry – like the wonderful Angus McBride picture on the front of the Osprey book.

Need the mastiff to stay in final design.

LOVE the Conquistador cavalry. If the pack had pistols and some heavier helmets the set could easily also make Gent dArmes and Imperial Reiters. It would instantly become the most versatile Renaissance set.

Arrigo Velicogna - July 12, 2021

I like them both. To be quite honest I do not see the need for sci-fi fantasy part in a historical set. The option for armoured/unarmoured horses and riders are excellent. Considering this set is aimed at the first few decades of the XVI century I do not see the need for firearms. One thing it would be nice is some great helms for Spanish Gentes de Armas in Italy.

Kevin Scrivner – July 9, 2021: “Speaking of Jesus Christ, it would be historically accurate to include some devout Spanish missionaries in your Conquistador line. Catholic friars such as Junipero Serra were as tough and dedicated as any soldier and were essential to the colonization effort.”

That sounds to me like another good reason to do the set of monks/cultists that appeared in the voting a couple months ago: that would be a very versatile set with a bunch of uses, and Spanish missionaries sounds like another way that set could have been used!

Ten Fingered Jack - July 12, 2021

Finally! Franks wearing helmets.

A couple of small points, but is it too late to make the horses’ ears a bit longer and the eyes a bit rounder? I agree with Lerdou-Udoy Pierre; the girth should be immediately behind the front legs, in front of the barrel.
