Greatcoats Army

  • Guess these guys are retroactively WGA related. Salvage work on old Proxy imperial guard project from two decades ago. Wargames factory greatcoats, with WGA grognard heads (replacing some old metal heads i'd used back then, which didn't turn out the way i'd wanted), and bits from various places, most now defunct.

three squads of infantry with one squad leader (with pistol), seven rifelement, and 2 support gunners (were going to be proxy plasma gunners) in each.

plus a five man command team. two riflemen, two grenaders, and a platoon commander with a bolter.

WGA bases with magnets in them, along with a new armybox made from an old ornament case and some adhesive magnet-receptive rubber sheets.

if i expand it beyond the three and a half squads, i'll probably use WGA grognards and/or Raumjagers and just kitbash my (very large) supply of spare arms onto them. currently considering some Sentinel walker proxy options to give them a couple vehicles.. eying the one from the 'Marcher' game that's basically a Renault FT on legs. which i can get on Etsy fairly cheap from the licensed seller.

i must say that while i like how the bases are easy to get the magnet in, a 2x1mm magnet doesn't really have much gripping power on the sheet's i'm using. it keeps them from sliding during normal carry but if the box tilts too much it won't keep them in place. i think a wider magnet would have worked better.

  • Oh, some of those bits look familiar, now I know where I got them from!  I don't have more than a handful of them, and not everything looks familiar, so I don't think I ever had a full box - I probably got someone's leftovers from a second-hand site.  I assumed all this time that the bits I had were either 40K (which I'd also gotten from time to time second-hand as loose bits) or from the original manufacturerfor Iron Core before Wargames Atlantic got the license, but now I'm almost completely certain they match the greatcoat bodies and weapons in your army.

The Grognard bits seem to work perfectly with them - great work!

If nothing else works for a walker, you might get some mileage from Archon Studio's "Mammoth" - it's reasonably affordable (about the cost of a box of wargames Atlantic figures), and looks like it might be a good match for this sort of army.  (Their "Wolverine" tank wouldn't look out of place, either, for about the same price, whille their "City Defenders" set, though a bit pricier, does include a frame of female fighters with a similar greatcoats-and-gasmasks uniform, and a frame of small, tracked heavy weapons/drones with operators in very similar unforms; the heavy weapons are my favorite part of the set, too bad those aren't available separately!)

  • the only WGA bits are the heads, but they did work out fairly well. they would have worked even better if i'd been able to remove all of the old super glue from attaching the previous heads (which meant i had to clip the mounting ball on a few of thegrognard heads to fit.) the squad leader pistols came from Hasslefree minis (sadly now defunct) as part of a sprue of scifi guns, most of which i haven't found use for yet. i forget where i got the backpacks from, but they were from a company that did a lot of vietnam and modern 25-28mm minis in metal. probably also defunct at this point.

as far as the walker, i have one of the Marcher New French Republic "Danton" walkers coming.

though the one i ordered is the 'sealed up' version without the commander hanging out, and uses the conventional cannon rather than the flamer. they're $15 currently on the Carbon Miniatures Etsy store. if it works out i'll probably grab a 2nd one. (and i have to admit, the walking howitzer/antitank gun version is tempting as a heavy weapons team option)

i've actually been thinking on ways to augment this army further. the Marcher version of the Char 1b (the "R-1B Liberté") looks neat (and probably could be run as a Malcador 'Annihilator' if i ever return to 40K.), as does the game's Renault R34 analog (the "R35 Marat") though that doesn't have a 40k analog iirc. so armor is covered. no good APC's from Marcher unless i want to use non-french stuff, but i'm hoping i'll be able to pick up some Maulers from The Damned and convert them into something more like an IFV.

it's additional infantry that is going to be the tricky bit i think. with the Grognard infantry sprue redesign, supplies of the seperate head sprue is drying up, and of course i'd have to source new backpacks. i'm not sure if the grognards or the raumjager would work better as the base bodies for future expansion, though i have a ton of spare arms from the greatcoat kits that i can probably kitbash onto either. the Grognard torso's look fancier than the greatcoat ones, and would resolve the heads issue, but the Raumjager bodies look closer to the greatcoats figures. not really inclined to buy two boxes just to build one box worth of infantry, so i'll either need to find a suitable head option to put on the raumjagers, or just accept the fancier uniforms of the grognards.

and i've been meaning to get one of the Archon Wolverine tanks.. not for this, but for my mantic space orcs! 🙂 which is another army project i recently finished assembling (half a starter set for Warpath Firefight, plus a couple guntracks and a deadzone starter box. it's a fairly large force of infantry.. and yet i still need to get some vehicles for them to fill out the army list.)

which reminds me i need to assemble the Enforcer half of that starter set.
