New Set Announcement: Thureophoroi!

New Set Announcement: Thureophoroi!

A new set is coming for our FIRST EMPIRES range: Thureophoroi! But first we need your help. We'd like you to take a look at what we have here so far and make any suggestions. Primarily we believe the thuros (shield) is not the right shape and needs to be more narrow? Let us know your thoughts below!

An incomplete selection of unique parts from the set.

Above are some 3D prints of the test sculpts to give you a better idea of the assembled figures.

To learn more about the famed Thureophoroi have a look at Jeff Jonas' wonderful article on AncientBattles.com:

Sorry, I am useless on the shield question – I think this set is amazing as is. Box 1 will definitely get assembled and painted “historical” and join their brothers in my Hellenistics mob. Boxes 2- infinity will be joining my imagi-nations-ancients armies. Only suggestion would be to consider adding an arm/hand combo with a sling – no idea if there is any historical basis but it would be cool. Really looking forward to this set.

That is exactly the kind of versatile kit I can expect for ancient wartimes : tunic are ok for Greeks, Macedonians, Epiriots, Seleucids, Carthaginians, Pontics, Illyrians, Iberians, Jews and Romans (up to Trajan Time : training or working tunics, Marine crewmen)… and for civilians and Servile wars “troopers” too !
Helmets are useful for the third and second centuries (for all Mediterranean armies) and a little bit more : for Roman Republican officers (and eastern troopers) up to Caesar, Pompeius, Marcus Antonius and Octavus for example, with few conversions.
Shields and javelins are ok for Gauls, Germans, Carthaginians mercenaries, Iberians, Roman auxiliaries, Dacians and so on…
Beware of the direction of the two javelins behind the “Gallic” shield : the link hand holds the central horizontal handgrip and the javelins too (ie. 90° with regard to the vertical axis of the shield).
Greek kopis (sword) is good for all Mediterranean, North-African and Eastern warriors.
If there’s a possible mix with other heads and artifacts (V…x), I’m absolutely in !
Very exciting kit for me.

Yes I see what you mean about the shield, I’m not sure but it does look slightly fat in comparison to the body, I checked. Other than that nice work it’s spot on.

Looking good to me, I also think a few more head options would be great. I wouldn’t mind a few more swords as well; even if not historically correct, I am already eyeing these for some extra use in fantasy warbands; looking at you, Erewhon…

Good stuff, I love how you keep doing a variety of kits! I’m curious though, when can we see some skeleton cavalry?

Shaun My opinion is based on looking at Perry or Atlantic or others where you get proper 28mm models for a very good price. 40 Perry at £20 or 40 Atlantic at £25 are still a better deal per figure than the hugely oversized Victrix. Atlantic has them beat on Persians too with 10 more per box at the same price. Victrix oversized with the static poses where you glue on an arm part and not a full arm is also off putting. But to each their own. I suspect Victrix are looking at Atlantic with some trepidation given the quality and quantity of their releases.

Oh well,

that made my comment yesterday on another blog post about ‘garbage’ (and again just a very personal opinion…) moot. This is a really, really, useful box.

Thureophoroi are essential to any post Galatian invasion Hellenistic army and they are for not missing in plastic (so no reason to say buy Victrix… they are not doing them). I have no issue with the so called ‘flimsy’ spear and javelins arms. They are not flimsy at all in my experience, and they are much less a pain to build that open hands plus weapon.

I agree spears and javelins are more critical than swords here, but some sword arms (officers, men in close combat drawing their sidearm) are welcome.

Looking forward to them!

Directed towards Bill.

You are aware that the Victrix Vikings kit contains 60 miniatures for £38. That’s almost three times the number of other kits available! You price up the multiple boxes needed from other manufacturers and you are paying well above Victrix’s asking price.

That’s not factoring into the picture that Victrix’s level of detail is far superior to every one of its competitors.

As for the 28mm Vs 32mm. In my opinion that is merely splitting hairs. It’s not as if every human being who ever fought in a Battler was under 5’10. There is plenty of scope for various sizes.

Each to their own.

But your comment, in my humble opinion, is either born out of ignorance, or your own bias and not one of actual reality. 99% of the serious reviews will back me up on this one.

Shaun Victrix are ok but they have somehow decided to make 32mm models instead of proper 28s and very expensive. Vikings are £38!

I would like to see another couple of heads for a bit more variation.
