New Set Announcement: Thureophoroi!

New Set Announcement: Thureophoroi!

A new set is coming for our FIRST EMPIRES range: Thureophoroi! But first we need your help. We'd like you to take a look at what we have here so far and make any suggestions. Primarily we believe the thuros (shield) is not the right shape and needs to be more narrow? Let us know your thoughts below!

An incomplete selection of unique parts from the set.

Above are some 3D prints of the test sculpts to give you a better idea of the assembled figures.

To learn more about the famed Thureophoroi have a look at Jeff Jonas' wonderful article on AncientBattles.com:

These don’t look like Crimean War British Grenadier Guards to me.

I could be wrong, and they are just lurking in the background.

Don’t want to be that guy. But what the hell! Victrix and a few others have done this sort of stuff to death and made kits with large numbers of figures available to boot.

I don’t think trying to compete along those lines is gonna be a great strategy long term. But perhaps I’m wrong.

It’s not like I’m against ancients. I’m not. In fact I’m awaiting the release of Victrix Norman infantry and cavalry. I regard Victrix as the benchmark for ancient plastics including value for money. I don’t see the point in trying to compete.

Regardless. Keep up the great work and I’m always happy to support yourselves.

I don’t know anything about the historical period so feel free to ignore this, but are there different heads that could go with the set to make the bodies work for different armies and nearby periods?

Is it not far more advantageous in terms of sculpting, mold layout and tooling to just offer spear/javelin arms without flimsy plastic spears javelins attached? This would allow more space on sprues for extra bits. I’m not saying don’t include plastic spears/javelins, these could be simply molded within sprue as a small rack of them, molded in one direction to easy plastic flow.
Other than that I think shield is slightly wide, but you knew that anyway. and rest of figs look great, would be a good set.

Do keep the swords, just be sure there are enough spears to keep the purists happy :) To me, it looks like these guys might kitbash nicely outside of the ancient era – the shields and hats are the only things that would look conspicuous among sword-and-sorcery fantasy models, or even Dark Ages or Medieval historical figures, so maybe include a few spare heads with different hats or even non-human faces for kitbashing purposes (I suspect that these guys might make excellent bases to build the old “pig-faced orcs” that some nostalgic fantasy gamers pine for!) As for the original question, the shields as-is seem fine to me, but I’ll defer to the historical gamers on that!

I’m disagreeing with the comment above, i think you have the mix of spears and swords right, many folks wont be using these as historic figures and the range of options is useful.

Those who play historic can put good spear armed units out there very easily.

Again looking high quality and good

I agree that arms holding swords aren’t really a priority. One thing the set might include is some arms holding rhomphaia, which would allow the figures to be used as later Thracians.

I agree with Mitch above! Adding a few more helmet types (including Boeotian!!!) would help cover all the bases. Thureophoroi were like the Swiss army knife of the hellenistic period, so having a wide range of heads would allow these guys too be employed in several different theatres. Not to mention, a multitude of head options also helps with potential crossover kitbashing possibilities, as well!

Nice, I’d say less sword arms and more spears/javelins. The sword was a backup weapon for these guys.

If you can, why not put peltast shields and a couple of bare heads/heads in soft hats on the sprue also?

The shields could be slightly more narrow but also longer. A shield that was even with the shoulder at the joint of the arm down to the mid leg area. This way they could run or move fast to strike or fall back and make a shield wall with spears out. I love this period.

Beoitian helmets as well as Ascalon would be amazing. Maybe optional legs with pants to give them a more eastern feel for successor armies like the Seleucids would be cool!
As stated the shields should be elongated to be narrower but so far this looks awesome!
