New Set Announcement: Thureophoroi!

New Set Announcement: Thureophoroi!

A new set is coming for our FIRST EMPIRES range: Thureophoroi! But first we need your help. We'd like you to take a look at what we have here so far and make any suggestions. Primarily we believe the thuros (shield) is not the right shape and needs to be more narrow? Let us know your thoughts below!

An incomplete selection of unique parts from the set.

Above are some 3D prints of the test sculpts to give you a better idea of the assembled figures.

To learn more about the famed Thureophoroi have a look at Jeff Jonas' wonderful article on AncientBattles.com:

Hi,
Originally, Thureophoroi were celtic mercenaries.
The center of their civilisation was between Rhine and Danube : now Switzerland, Austria, Southern Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and southern Poland. The cultural reference names are : Halstatt (Austria) and La Tène (Switzerland). There is a great museum in La Tène (Hauterive, the Latenium) : more than 2500 archeologic objects were found in this area, particularly shields. Celtic mercenaries fought for and against all powers : Macedonia, Greece, Seleucids, Carthage, Rome, and so on…
The real size of such objects vary : there was no uniformity, but homogeneity ! Height : circa 1 to 1,20 m (medium 1,10 m). Widht : circa 45 to 60 cm (medium 50 cm). Those shields were made for cavalry and infantry fight together. They were protective and agressive weapons too (violent strikes with the umbo or the end parts are possible). I have tried them as reenactor… very punchy !
May I suggest you to contact the Latenium ? You can always see the site “Balkancelts” (Tag La Tène Shields) and articles from two very wonderful and competent Gaulish Reenactment Associations : TRIMATRICI (l’armement défensif) and AMBIANI (in contenu : les armes défensives). Both are serious and skillful.
I hope this can help. Good research !

Nice! I like them, even though I am very unfamiliar with the historical Wargames.

As you think, and like other people have said, the shield could be a little more narrow. But I think it could be a little more long too. On the illustrations presented on the article of AncientBattles.com, it seems that the shield is large enough to protect a man from shoulder to below the knee.

I would be interested by a picture of one of your 3D print test sculpt WITH the shield to see how your prototype looks like.

Yes, the theuros need to be longer.

If these are of the same high quality as your Irish Warriors, they will be the very best on the market. Cannot wait to grab a few boxes!

These are rather good as is, though as mentioned narrowing the shield just a little bit would give a really good profile.

Should add one of the best manufacturers out their right now keep it up!

I think the shields could be a little narrower, but I’m not an expert.
