"Space Brits" Work in Progress

"Space Brits" Work in Progress

After the Cannon Fodder release this summer, our next faction for Death Fields are the "Space Brits" (name to be determined). Here's a shot of some of the parts we're working on.

There will be four bodies on the sprue with enough standard rifles and heads (with and without gasmasks) for all of them.

We're not sure if we'll do shoulder pads, back packs, maybe epaulettes? Let us know your advice below!

SAS still works for the deathfields space brits. Either Special Aerospace Service or Space Arena Service are what I came up with. Ik they’re WW1 / Interwar so it’ll be a long shot that’ll be their name.

I am certainly interested in the Space Brits concept and I can’t wait to get some and play around with the various options of Heads and weapons.

The kneeling pose doesn’t work – I tried it and it’s totally unnatural, not a stable position at all for firing. Could you make the ‘bazooka’ look more like a PIAT?

@Dan Fisher.

You are missing one very big factor here.

These are designed to fit within WAs Deathfields. These miniatures are designed around the aesthetic for that game, which currently has a ultra minimalist approach to look of the weapons etc.

These look to fit in very well with that.

Your idea of Sci-fi is very different to theirs or my take on it.

I personally love the odd emphasis and minimalist approach to the Deathfields kits. The WWI take , and the yester year Bearskins are a very welcome inclusion. There currently exists tons of Sci-fi miniatures with ultra futuristic weapons etc. In my humble opinion, WA are producing some very unique and alternative kits to the mainstream of thought on the subject.

Long may it continue.

That’s why I will be buying these kits and not your vision.

Awesome!

I’d add a Bren gun, some sten guns and possibly the option of a set of arms with a tea cup and saucer and maybe another one holding binoculars and a map/map machine thing.

Also, get some Brody helmets – the helmets just don’t look right for that quintessential “Tommy” look.

Love what I’m seeing but there is nothing “Space” about them.

EVERYTHING on that sprue is 1870-1944, Boer wars to WW2. There is nothing sci fi here.

All these weapons and uniforms were obsolete by 1950.

Even the “flame thrower”, invented by the germans late WW1, looks like a 1 shot, short range acid or napalm squirting gun with it’s cannister hanging from it. The bear skin hats stopped being used in combat BEFORE 1870. The lewis gun and pump action shotgun were obsolete by 1918.

None of this is futuristic. A beautiful and SLIGHTLY different take on WW1 thou.

Sci Fi would be ray guns, special communication packs, hi tech helmet mounted (not just 1990’s) battle sights, force field generators, predator style shoulder mounted guns, man portable guided missiles, bigger ray guns, lots of types of rays guns, helmets with HUD visors, ray guns, blasters, ray guns, lots more types of grenades and more of them (actual soldiers in combat can be festooned with them), ray guns.

By 1960 most of the worlds armies were better equipped than these blokes on the sprue. They are mislabelled as “Space” Brits.

I would LOVE and would buy steampunk sci fi/Victorian/WW1 Science fiction figs but these are not them. These ARE WW1 Brits with almost no changes to standard WW1 kit. Yours, Dan

The more I look at it, the more I like the sculpts as they are, and think there just needs to be a couple of add ons to make them more sci fi as an option.

For the rifles, a simple extra tech greeble that goes over the magazine and side of the gun would make it look like a futuristic ray gun, while the Light Machine Gun just needs an alternative barrel on the end to make it into a futuristic energy weapon.

The same could be done with the backpack tanked flamethrower, but I think this is the only one that looks entirely too much like an old antique weapon, and seems superfluous given the other, smaller, far better looking flamethrower.

I definitely think ditching it and the gunfire effects for sci fi weapon optional parts, a comms pack and a different type of weapon would be better.

Actually as their British, a sci fi weapon that looks like the Dalek’s gun arm would be awesome.

Really like the look so far but my personal prefence after reading other recomendations would be:

-Love the pith helmets as an option but if your aiming for a WW 1 or 2 aesthetic then the Doughboy helmets and Service caps perhaps with a moustashe or two.

- Replace the Queen’s Guard/Bear Skins with either Dragoon helmet heads or berets heads due to common request (though Dragoons would be the preference due to wide availability of berets heads from other sources.)

- Since the gas masks are somewhat clunky looking and to save on excessive head choices, perhaps a seperate squad set could be made designed around the Small box respirator? As it would require alterations to the body.

- Whilst focusing on the body, I’m not sure why but the current poses just seem stilted. I know the historical “over the top and walk towards the enemy” mentality but making them a little more dynamic or posable for rank fire would be welcome.

- Sven-Ole Pedersen suggestions are quite solid regarding the armour and weapons, In addition I’d change the backpack flame thrower and missle launcher to resemble a Portable No2 and PIAT respectively.
Whilst also replacing the extra flame throwers with a Boys anti tank rifle and perhaps a more traditional weapon with alterations to make it stand in for the heavily requested plasma/meta alternative. If just to find a middle ground in the requests.

-Backpacks including a field radio would be very welcome as would be an arm with swagger stick or with binoculars. Alternatively these could be bits on the sprue that could be optionally glued into place.

Otherwise great work as always.

I can’t wait to get a few of these boxes!

Stephan - June 21, 2021

I‘d include classic british WW2 Style weapons PIAT or Bren Guns, as welk as the classic Sten MP.
