Set Suggestion: Modular Space Fleet Officers and Crew

  • Hey all!

As the title suggests, I'd love to see a set of modular officers and crew for a space fleet.

    Bodies
Star Wars-style Imperial navy officer bodies - Male and Female
Longcoat-space royal navy bodies - Male and female
Nasapunk bodies - Loose and baggy, unibody (Cannon fodder with some armor plates?)

    Arms (shoulders)
Plain/rounded shoulders - combined with Imperial navy would work for Star Trek style crew
Sharp corner shoulders - Generic space navy/Imperial navy officers
Fringe epaulet shoulders - Space royal navy/fancy space navy
    Nasapunk arms

Also suggest fun things in hands; tea cup, swords, cigars, pcoketwatches, etc.

    Heads
Peaked caps - male and female
Fancy/professional - Beards/mustaches for male heads, professional buns any ponytails for females, monocle options for everybody
    Bubble helmets

For any of these, I'd strongly encourage the widest head compatibility possible, especially with the alien heads STL set. They are amazing heads, but they can interfere with some of the current range of bodies. Keeping these compatible for alien space navy crew and officers would be a nice touch.

  • @Greaver Blade "Nasapunk" sounds like the male and female Cannon fodder bodies we already have, maybe a more  armored astronaut/cosmonaut body for their heavy troopers?

Infact not to knock it but I would say this is already covered one way or another by what WA has and is kinda of coals to newcastle.

  • @Brian Van De Walker Slap enough kits together and I can make something work. But more dedicated would be nice.

I agree on the Nasapunk stuff; I'd love some armor pieces to put on the bodies that were specifically compatible with the models, though the big visible zippers might be a bad idea in vacuum.

I'm really leaning more towards the Star Wars/Star Trek style models, or even a more sci-fi version of the HMS Captain and Ship Doctor.

For now I guess I see what sci-fi weapon arms I can reasonably stick on the US Navy Landing Party and British Naval Brigade (both sets that could really use some officers to round them out). I'll get Honor Harrington and some crew worked up eventually!

Addendum: I absolutely love "coals to Newcastle". I'm way too American to have run into that before, so I appreciate the usage.

  • I'd love to see more generic sci-fi kits.  Not sure if you've heard of it yet, but I believe that a wargame or RPG themed on the "Expanse" TV show successfully crowd-funded a couple months ago, and will include some plastic mini kits produced by Wargames Atlantic, which looks they'll be just a bit closer to Cyberpunk than Starfleet, but might still cover some of this ground:

Between WA's Cannon Fodder, Ooh-Rah, Expanse crewmen, the WA "Iron Core" and "Reptilian Overloards SpaceNam" sets, North Star's "Stargrave" sets, the sci-fi side of Archon's "Dungeons & Lasers" stuff, and whatever "Chronoscope" sci-fi stuff Reaper still has in plastic, it's nice to see traditional sci-fi gamers getting at least a little love in inexpensive plastic.  (WA's other Death Fields sets are icing on the sci-fi cake!)

And, speaking of "Iron Core", it sounds like Wargames Atlantic is still working with the Iron Core license with new sets for it in the pipeline - keep an eye open for those!  Before the license moved to WA, there were (I think) sets that included long-coat officers with peaked caps that looked pretty darned close Star Wars Imperial officers... those sets are no longer in print, but with any luck, maybe reprints from WA are on the menu!  (The Iron Core Valkyries look like they've just been announced and/or released by WA, and I'm hoping some version of the old Iron Core accessories/command sets, which included tons of special weapons, gear, crates, and robot mules, might appear some day - I find all sorts of little uses for the bits from those all the time!)

  • Yeah a heavily armored version of the Cannon Fodder would be nice to see. Heck, a more heavily armored version of stuff like the Einherjar and Les Grognards would be cool too.

It is nice to see generic sci-fi get some plastic love since Gothic/Grimdark Sci-Fi is kind of dominated by GW. Though I would like to see a plastic set of cyberpunk gangers too.

Honestly, I don't know what can be added. Aside from power armored varients of Death Fields armies (am I the only one who thinks they can get away with having power armor as an option for elite units in Death Fields?)

  • @Yronimos Whateley Got the book on order, but needed to hold off on the minis at the time due to gaming budget limits for the month.

Will definitely pick up some later.

I've actually still got my promo minis and a Leviathan from the original Iron Core kickstarter. While the little models aren't to scale any more, the Leviathan will do just fine as is. It's just... so much model.

  • @Charles Tottington I fully agree. And on the digital side of things, there's a few power armored units out there. The Valkyries are my favorites.

But some power armor options for existing ranges would honestly be really cool. A great way to get some heavy and superheavy infantry for the variety of wargames out there. We actually sorta have this now with the Iron Core range, and I'm running a mixed Stormtrooper/Valkir list using the OPR Battle Brothers. The scouts-equivalent for the stormtroopers, and the power armor brothers for the valkir.

  • @Yronimos Whateley The Iron Core sets where all armored unlike starwars imperial officers.

@Greaver Blade Hmm, well you could actually do a pretty okay generic SciFi army by buying the Eisenkern infantry set then getting a box of WA's WW2 Panzer Lehr and swap the WW2 rifles and maybe the SMGs for the leftover Eisenkern guns.

The Panzer Lehr come with hats that match up with the unhelmeted cloth hat Eisenkens, come with parts for mechanics, has an RPG launcher which is missing from the new Iron Core sets, and actually look pretty starwars as long as you aviod the cloth covered strawhelms (I didn't but I wanted a more "Generic SciFi Anime" look for my Iron Core troops). Likewise you might even be able to convert the Panzer Lehr to Startrek look alikes if you aviod the headgear and and make spruebit guns, they are pretty "generic SciFi" looking in the outfit department.

  • Weird, I had gotten a handful of bodies in officer uniforms at about the same time I'd gotten a batch of Iron Core sets years ago, if they didn't come with the Iron Core stuff, I don't know where they came from.  Maybe they were some leftovers from a 40K set that someone unloaded on a bitz site, otherwise they're a mystery to me now.

Truly, officers for an Evil Space Empire are something that could be souped up from any of the growing number of WWII or even WWI sets - it's more or less what the original Star Wars production did anyway with costumes, weapon props, and so on - used the originals for loose inspiraton, where they didn't use the originals for the actual props and weapons.  As mentioned by others, Germans are the obvious choice, and the Panzer Lehr are probably the best option with the least resistance, but depending on how loosely you're willing to pastiche Star Wars, I certainly wouldn't rule out any of the other WWII or WWI factions as alternatives:  a little black, dark grey, or red paint could go a long way toward making any officer models look like sci-fi villains.

Speaking of using historical figures in a sci-fi context, I wouldn't neglect the Wargames Atlantic Afghans, Boxers, or even Baron's War Peasant Levy as a source of bodies, heads, and other bits:  they'd fit right into the context of a Dune or Tatooine.  And, looking a bit outside the usual Star Wars box a bit, the Napoleonics and Romans would lend themselves nicely into a retro-scifi context (the WA "Citizens of Rome" set is basically the stuff of the classic sci-fi "Crystal Spires and Togas" aesthetic frequently seen in Star Trek, Ray Bradbury stories like "The Martian Chronicles", and comic books rooted in more or less the same era....  I don't think the frequently-teased WA Ancient Egyptian set has hit the shelves yet, but that sort of thing provided similar fuel with an Egyptian spin for the "Stargate" franchise.)

I'm glad to see more options available for power armor now - Reaper has plastic "Bones" figures that work nicely for this purpose (Blackstar Corsairs), but Wargames Atlantic has a couple nice options now - I rather like where the digital "Tentacus Armor" is going:

Still, we can absolutely use more aliens, robots, starfleet costumes, and proper space suits, and a little more love for post-apocalyptic sci-fi!
