Where is that from?
@Steven StGeorges
Where is that from?
@JTam
.from the skeleton of a background given by GW. "Leaguers" are living under the rule of Uber IA -the Ancestor Cores, so the very opposite of Eldar's Infinity Circuit- and are so masters of everything related to Technology thanks to their massive data banks. They are still sharing the same philosophy about IAs with the Adeptus Mechanicus -so related to the Void Dragon below the plains of Mars. But lately the Ancestor Cores became more and more eccentrical and mercurial, could be related to the return of the Silent King from Outer Space (and the coming of the 'Nids)... I am theorizing ACs to be shards of some minor C'tan entities or even some major one, name now lost.
Roknauts.. I was aware about I do enjoy the style but I totally dislike the Fantasy-like beards models are displaying.. they could be used as Elite Unit cause of their equipment..
[edit] since Curis aka Ninjabread could produce more Space Dwarves in the future... following his awesome blog -and becoming one of his numerous Patreons- is a must-do for everybody, veterans and newbies alike.
The Necrons and Tyranids are decent villains, I will give GW that much at least.
@Grumpy Gnome
.. and both were around since RT, unemployed but present. Mmm I think I do never read a battle report of Tyranids vs Necrons by the way...
And I am wondering if Tyranids are not Slanns in fact, driven crazy by the vastness of the Dark inbetween the Stars, mutating over the course of their odyssey in something else, something way more primal. Back to claim their now corrupted dominion, obliterating it in the process of Rebirth to cleanse it from the smears of the C'tan and the foulness of Warp Entities.
The background for both the Necrons and the Tyranids were at their peak before 5th edition.
@Steven StGeorges
The NinjaBread website is awesome. Thanks for the heads up!
And even educational. I had no idea there were interim metal Space Marine bodies with rounded joints that were compatible with the RTB01 plastic arms....
@BS Kitbasher
But a pity RT tyranids background did end in trashcan... Okay Zoats are back too -at least as part of Blackstone Fortress, same for Genestealer Cults... but in the meanwhile 'Nids turned into an unstoppable juggernaut invading the Milky Way from almost everywhere excepted galactic north -so the region centered around Eye of Terror.
@JTam
Oh you were not aware about ... RT space marines are compatible with most successor minis till '92 -so 3rd edition and the coming of the Black Templars. Ninjabread' site is a real hoard, and his Patreon page do worth the price to join it.
@Steven StGeorges
Until '92 sounds about right. When I got into 40K about 1994ish all the metal marines had flat joints.
But 2nd Edition (Also known as THE BEST EDITION) came out about 1993. And 3rd Edition with the Black Templars and Dark Eldar was around 1998.
So Good. (In all seriousness the little campaign booklet with increasingly large fights between the included Blood Angels and Orks has never been bettered in any other edition.)
Meh.
@Steven StGeorges
Reference:
That's an interesting take on it. Maybe that's the way GW will go with the fluff.
My interpretation of the Warhammer Community article was a bit more straightforward.
Knowledge of this would course lead to conflict with the Adeptus Mechanicus/Imperium as....
1. They will do anything to get STCs.
2. AIs, aka "Thinking Machines" are anathema.
To me this has overtones of the relationship between the Lizardmen and their somnolent Slann Priests. Also, has a dash of "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress," or maybe "2001 A Space Odyssey."
The original squat artist had a line of his own space dwarves for a while and they were pretty fun:
http://www.olleysarmies.co.uk/scrunts.html
@JTam
Oh my... 2nd instead of 3rd, my mistake... 98 for the Black Templars... argh... my bad. Thanks for the heads-up. I am getting too old... and really do need some long and pleasant vacations.
@Steven StGeorges
Don't we all Brother.
@Steven StGeorges Isn't the arch-enemy of the Necrons... just everyone?
On the Grimdark, not much my thing. That's why I usually play Orks ;)
The only true heroes of 40K. Which says it all, really.
@Mark Dewis
For sure, the Milky Way is now quite a place not to visit.. excepted for the 'Nids, but they are only passing by, aren't they? 😁
But with the coming of the Votanns, what's about the Demiurg part of the Tau?🙄
Then came the endless question: What next? Is another forgotten or brand new race coming?
And too much Grimdark is killing the setting IMHO, and Noblebright is overused the same way. What left? Hopepunk? That's why I am more into RT -or Stargrave at the moment, only touchs of grimdark, fairly enough; a joyful farrago (and a bit more thanks to WFB 3rd ed: Siege) of various sources of inspiration: from Hard Science, Science Fantasy, Gothic Horror to almost Classic Fantasy. 😏
@JTam
Indeed my friend... 🍻
@Steven StGeorges Weren't the Eldar supposed to be fitting that role already? (The role of arch-nemesis for Necrons) Haha
@SaucyNaut
Supposed ... but you know them.. always eager to skip the fun leaving others cleaning their mess -and facing the wrath of Kha.. err.. the Necrons 😁
@Steven StGeorges Yeaaaah. Not complaining too much. I think the more factions/races the better.
I think they should have done that instead of making 1.2billion space marine chapters.
@SaucyNaut
The Milky Way of Auld was a safer place to live and explore... There are a lot of players over the Blogosphere using a mix of RT and Stargrave to have funky games, some even converted Skaven to fit the setting -actually they were supposed to in the beginning, till some obscure power-that-were decided otherwise- as Hrud... Played once against such an army back to the 90s and had an awesome game.
@Steven StGeorges I only recently got into the miniature but what got me into it was playing the old Dawn of War games. Kind of a shame my favourite units from that aren't even being produced (Kroot from the Tau and the Gorgutz Warboss for the Orcs.)
I've seen a lot of cool things done with kitbashing and converting though, like Skaven for proxies of Genestealer Cults. I got interested in that myself and that's how I found myself on this website haha.
A lot to be said for creating your own mix of your favorite IPs and using the game mechanics of your choice.
They're back!
A tasteful homage actually. And if anyone still has a Squat army from back in the day he can use his old school trikes without any fuss in the current edition.
Then:
Now:
Also, the rider is supposedly female. I guess it's just a matter of beard or no beard.
@JTam
Oh my sweet FG. I do love the concept, some hovertank designed for space mining ... The rider is clearly female, clad in heavy attire -first time since Karak Drak's Shieldmaidens WFB 2nd ed, a "Dwarf" army is going to display she-warriors.
Concept: APPROVED
Design: APPROVED
Pricetag: *sinister snickers*
@Steven StGeorges
LOL.
__________
The revolver shotgun (bolter?) is fun.
But a lever shotgun would have been even better ;)
The concept is interesting but I just feel like it is overly busy and the proportions of everything are odd, it looks as if she has a nerf gun.
Nice write up and painted examples of the Roknaut Space Dwarves.
https://leadplague.blogspot.com/2022/05/roknauts-space-dwarves.html?m=1
@JTam
Another awesome painting job from Asslessman ... Maybe I am going to join KS, but I am still a bit reluctant cause of the unit officer while I do enjoy the rank and file soldier and autogun bearer. 🤔
@JTam
Really love those miners... 👍
The generation ships is interesting. And their ancient history falling into myth is as well.
Not as excited about the cloneskein thing. Although I suppose it gives them a good old fashioned dwarven resistance to magic.
@JTam
"The generation ships is interesting. And their ancient history falling into myth is as well.
Not as excited about the cloneskein thing. Although I suppose it gives them a good old fashioned dwarven resistance to magic."
Indeed, a good twisted way to explain why they are different from classic Homo Sapiens, providing them with a "magic resistance" as you said.
But such an ability could attract some Sentient Necrons -like the Silent King- eager to give their now robotic subjects a real body back... or the 'Nids -vast genetic banks waiting to be added to their own genetic pool...
And another funny fact is the Necromunda Gang is 100% composed with Squats, who are very distant relatives to Leaguers... the joy of lightspeed travel time dilatation I suppose.. 😁 Very the Forever War to my mind..
@JTam
For sure, the Cobra is back (Saint Bob reference)😁
And before I forgot (again) about them, let me introduce you to the Dorfs, another Saint Bob creation.
@Steven StGeorges
Nice.
I'm also partial to the Kromlech Dvergr
Bro, do you even operate?
Here's what appears to be a whole army of them painted up:
https://spikeybits.com/2022/05/amazing-squats-leagues-of-votann-army-by-castle-brush.html
@JTam
Have them all gathering dust somewhere still in blisters, excepted for the female medic -not a fan of both its sculpt and pose.. but I have to confess I am not a big fan of the special weapon models too -especially their hoods- while the heavy weapon teams -mortar and missile launcher- are lovely. A pity Kromlech did not release more models for that particular range. 🤨
@Steven StGeorges
The flamer and plasma gun heads are .... different.
Did the other blisters come with any extra heads?
The mortar is great:
The stretcher team is well executed too.
@JTam
Nope .. and some models do come as almost complete -and so monopose, you just need to add arms and/or weapons. A pity, I am not into resin but the models look great.. and I failed my Sanity Check while ordering them -wife was not at home.
Mortars are great same for antitank teamsters. A pity since, unlike his Orks and not-IGs, Kromlech never added more versatility to such range: more heads options for instance and a way to adapt dvergr commandos other heavy weapons combo. And since they are paratroopers -think so-, just jumpacks at least.
@Steven StGeorges
I have no issues with resin, or metal for that matter. So it's really surprising I passed my Sanity Check for these guys. I was thinking about picking up just a dozen or so to run as Imperial Guard Stormtroopers in Kill Team.
@JTam
Lucky you... 😁
Another lore update. This time on travel sized abomination thinking machines.
(Isn't that one of the robots zipping about during the Anakin Vs Kenobi lava fight?)
Pretty solid update:
They show a whole squad:
Its Thegyn leader:
And special weapons:
I think the bottom one is the magna-rail rifle.
@JTam
I really do enjoy the addition of Thinking Machines alongside Squ... er.. Leaguers as an hommage to ancient Imperial lists (basically RT and 2nd ed.) when Warbots were still a thing amongst 40K armies and so funky-funny units to play with (with such a ridiculously complicated set of rules by the way).
Now the new HearthGuard is a bit too Tau-esque to my likeness but totally in line with current 30K/40K setting since the various techs Leaguers do use on a daily basis are what? 10000 years old so the look of their Kin-machines and vehicles.
@Steven StGeorges
Warbots were just a bit before my time. But didn't you have to pre-pick "programming" for your robots that guided their actions on the battlefield? They were the opposite of thinking machines weren't they?
GW kind of resurrected them with:
They have to have the Tech Priest along to feed them appropriate programs/ guide their actions. Because again, thinking machines are anathema.
...
Have you seen pictures of the Hearthguard?
I think the above squad is "just" line Infantry.
The Hearthguard may possible wear suits more in line with the Necromunda Squat's Exo Armor.....
@JTam
The "programming sequence" was totally nonsense (like most of the rules back then).. but the "execution" was the most hilarious part of the game every single time. Like most of players back then, I failed to
a)correctly place my warbots on the battelfield
b)use them accordingly to their programming, so too close of my troops
c)integrate their programming to my strategy..
So most of time they
a)were unable to reach enemy lines and so self-destruct
b)initiated self-destruct while still too close of my troops
c)were just roaming the battlefield like some headless chickens .. to finally self-destruct. But they usually did some damages with their mounted heavy weapons.
So after a while I decided to apply homebrew rules for some UK players thanks to ancient mailinglist (Internet was still a dream back then) so adding a monitor to control and watch over them -working like a commissar tempering Ogryns, then a techmarine when they did appear in WD. At last my Cataphracts and Castellans were able to do something when fighting alongside my assault marines or my Guard Dreadnoughts (oh yes IG Dreadnoughts were so funny).. Rules were pretty silly back to RT era, but they did often add what we called a "Fun phase".
A pity GW did not bring back warbots to the Orkoids when adding the Adeptus Mechanicus army to the setting...
Just the file and rank Infantry? ... Damn' the new HearthGuard is going to be a like a new version of the Deathroller... 😆
@BS Kitbasher Hi my favorite is Weird War 2 D20 System. A nice back ground, that slips into WW2 quite gently, then picks up pace with several add on books. Can be brought resonable second hand, or PDF`s from RPG Store, figures any you wish, with great potential for converstions. Mechs , zombies werwolves, they are all there, and much more. Rubicon, makes most WW2 vehicles needed, and along with Perry Plastics, and Wargames Atlantic you got the lot.
@Steven StGeorges
I remember looking at the robot programming rule in an old White Dwarf back in the day.
Thanks for sharing how they worked in real life/on the gaming table.
I checked the Warhammer Community fluff article again and the pictured squad is "Hearthkyn" who "make up the core" of a not-Squat army.
@JTam I love the fact one of them literally looks like a biker with the shades and mustache.
@Charles Tottington
Concur. It's a nice include for those that like the old school Squat vibe. And for those that aren't feeling it..... I'm sure there's enough helmet heads.
New lore update, art, and size comparisons:
https://www.warhammer-community.com/2022/06/30/lore-of-the-votann-the-anatomy-of-the-kin/
Dwarfed by a Primaris..... but then again so are humans.
In comparison with a Rogue Trader?
.....
There's also a new box set for Kill Team coming out, and if I was a betting man it looks like Squats/Votanns versus maybe Tyranids?
@JTam
Could be my good friend.. another set with quite a lovely pricetag...
Actually I am resisting to some unspeakable urge to preorder some of upcoming The Horus Heresy: I already knew that Legiones Astartes sets (each box covering a specific type of Space Marines MK models especially the MKVI Beakie) sets are bout 95$CAN... 😅 RTB01 models are surprisingly quite cheaper now over the net.
But I am more interested in Weapons sets... and again GW is our friend: Heavy Bolters and Missile Launchers (10 of each) for 53$CAN and Special Weapons Upgrade set for the same price (60 special weapons, including some lovely miniguns).. so I could be able to finally turn my 10 MKVIII Errant into a playing squad.
